Rock and Roll 1/2 Marathon RECAP

Standard

Yesterday was my first Half Marathon. If you recall, I decided one day to train for my first 5K before my 40th birthday. Running was NOT something I ever did. EVER. At the time, I had a 3 and 6 year old. I worked full time. I was just getting into the swing of things juggling those boys and my life. I never, ever thought that one day I would be running a 1/2 marathon.

Well, this year, I started running with Black Girls Run, my running group. These women were so much fun. They were encouraging. They pushed me to keep going further. I went from 1 mile to 3 miles. From 3 miles to 5 miles. One day, I ran 7. Then, they signed me up for my first ten mile race. I conquered the Broad Street Run. I started training with a crew of ladies who were training for their first half marathons. Team 13.1 is what we started calling ourselves after the number of miles in the race.

Every morning at 5am, we trained hard. Some mornings, we ran hills. Some mornings we did boot camp. Some mornings, we did speed intervals. Once a week, we ran a long run. We did this for about 12 weeks. Finally, two weeks ago, one of the ladies asked me if I was running the 1/2 marathon with them. To tell the truth, I was scared that I couldn’t do it. It just sounded so crazy. In my head….I DON’T RUN HALF MARATHONS.

Finally, I realized the deadline had passed for me to register without paying a gazillion dollars. One of the teammates, pulled out of the event due to injury and I ended up with her race bib. Suddenly, I felt like the universe was conspiring to propel me to run this race. I drank the Kool Aid and got ready.

Saturday night, my stomach was killing me. I was so anxious. I think I got four hours of sleep.

I woke up on Sunday morning and started getting ready. When I got there, I found my training crew. We were all anxious but we had run the distance once before. We hugged each other and encouraged each other.

PRE-RACE laughs with my training crew….

During the race, we talked and felt good. We passed miles and enjoyed the race waving to friends and family all the way. We saw an elderly gentleman running in a POW-MIA shirt while holding an American flag on a long flagpole. It brought tears to my eyes. Around mile 7, one of my co-workers who had been reclaiming his health ran up and hugged me. He was running his first race too. We high fived and joked that we would see each other on the finish line.

Our running team had cheerleaders at every mile marker. They were awesome. They had signs and cheered for us by name. They were so uplifting. I cruised into mile ten feeling good.

THE BEST PEP SQUAD EVER!

Right around mile 10-all smiles

At mile 11 1/2, my body started to hit the wall. My breathing was not labored thanks to all of my swimming and endurance training. For an asthmatic, I used to worry about gasping for air but I have great breath control now. However, my legs were starting to feel it. My body started talking to me.

My knees said “Look here. Didn’t we have a talk not too long ago? Didn’t I tell you to sit your old azz down and rest? Why do you have me out here doing this?”

All of a sudden, I looked over and saw one of our coaches. This woman. WHEW. She was not running today but she knew that on training runs, we had all started to struggle at the end. She positioned herself right at that mile 11.5 marker and what did she yell out to us? “There you guys are. I have been waiting specifically for you.” Then she ran into the street and started yelling (with love) MOVE IT LADIES, THIS IS THE HOMESTRETCH. YOU ARE 2 MILES AWAY. LET”S GO! She then started to run next to us and push us. I told her I had to go slow at this point cause my legs were shot. She told me to “stop making excuses and keep moving.” LOL…gotta love it.

She ran the remaining two miles in with us before turning back to go run in with more of our team. BGR had almost 60 runners in the race. Amazing. She helped run in most of us. What an angel.

CROSSING THE FINISH LINE WITH OUR COACH NEXT TO US (she is on the right with no race bib on)

What was great was that we stayed next to each other for the entire race. We all finished within seconds of each other. Here we are right after we all received our post race medals. Minutes after finishing.

POST RACE PHOTO

I really did it. It is now starting to sink in.

It was a great experience. On a personal note, I also got to compete and train for all these weeks with my sorority sisters. We love each other and pushed, coached and held each other up. We all purchased special shirts to commemorate our 13.1 miles. To find them in pink and green was perfect. We showed up to our post race brunch rocking our AKA pearls and our shirts.

TEAM AKA/TEAM 13.1

Yup, Thirteen point freaking one…your girl is a RUNNER.

With a husband who lives and dies for the Pittsburgh Steelers, you already know what is happening at Casa de 1969 this weekend right?

Two snaps if your guess involved a whole slew of frat brothers, two kids under 8, a buffet of game food, beer and well, me. Before you say anything else, please know that I have a sorority meeting on Superbowl Sunday at 3pm. Now I love my Sorors but clearly, they are not thinking. I remember the year we had a meeting and the Giants were in the Superbowl. Uh yeah….guess who was in charge of a committee, needed to give a report and never showed up? *hand raised*

So yeah, I will be doing a whole lot of prep work on Saturday so I can just cook on Sunday and throw the rest of the stuff in when I return (I am only going for one hour, I swear! My exit strategy is TIGHT!)

I am developing my menu. My husband is asking for jerk chicken wings, fried chicken wings and buffalo wings and my chipotle meatballs *blank stare*. What happened to ordering pizza and some hoagies? I am sooo not feeling up to it this year but as a good wife, I will get it together before the end of the week.

Does anyone have any Superbowl recipes they would like to share? If so, send them over. I have the Steelers by three. Who ya got?

P.S. Why am I a friend of “Troy Polamalu’s hair on Facebook and Twitter? LMAO!

You in my House now….

So this Saturday is my Sorority’s Founder’s Day. There is a huge party celebrating the event at a nightclub in Philly. I am one of the hosts of this affair and have to get dressed up and *gasp* hang out in the club.

Now believe me, I have a secret clubhead past. You must remember, I grew up in the 80′s and 90′s when we saw the emergence of hip hop, house music and reggae hitting the mainstream in New York City. I have been hanging out in clubs since I was 17. I love music and I love dancing. You know….the throw on a pair of Girbaud shorts, a white tank top and dance on a speaker till your clothes are wet and your hair is jacked up kinda dancing. There isn’t a club in NYC that I didn’t go to in my day.

However, at this stage in my life, a night at a club is about as appealing as a bikini wax. The thought of getting dressed up and standing around looking cute for hours in heels until 2am? YAWN. I would so much rather be in my pj’s lounging on my couch watching a movie.

I will be a good sport though. All of my younger sorors are all hyped up for the party. I am off to find a dress (in my closet) and some shoes (at the store….I can always use a new shoe!). I’ll probably be asleep on my couch all day Sunday paying for it.

What do you have on deck for the weekend?

Ripping and Running

Standard

I feel like I haven’t sat down to write a “real” blog post in a while. I have been out fighting crime and saving the world like all Wonder Women out there.

I have been on the road meeting with all of my new accounts and new customers. On the weekends, I have been hanging with the Tali boys and engaging in all of their spring activities. Those boys stay busy!

I have a couple of developments to share. My company has an annual incentive trip for the top sales professionals in the organization. In order to win the trip, you have to exceed your sales goals by 15% for all four quarters of the year. Guess who won the trip for her efforts last year? (cues the jeopardy theme song) Yup…ME.

The trip was for two people to a luxurious Beach Resort. Free airfare, free hotel, free drinks, free spa and one night we will have a huge award banquet where the CEO will hand me my award. Pretty cool  huh? Since the trip was free for me and Mr. 1969, we decided to pay for the boys so they could attend. In addition, my Dad and his family will be in that area for a wedding over the same dates so we will get to see them as well. Pretty cool.

This weekend is my Sorority conference in DC so I am also packing and getting ready to get out of Dodge for the weekend. This April marks 20 years that I have been a member of my sorority. My line sisters and I are already planning a nice dinner in April in Brooklyn to celebrate.

In other news, I got an early birthday gift from one of my dearest friends….she bought tickets for us to go to the Maxwell-Jill Scott concert in Philly in June. *sigh* You already know!

As you can see, I have a lot on my plate. I apologize for the sporadic posting but hey, you have to live life to have something to write about. I am out being me. Life is hectic right now but it’s what I do. Hope everyone is enjoying the Spring. See ya next week.

90 degrees in the shade….

just how I like it….HOT!!!!

I swear, the warm weather makes me sooooo happy. I feel like I shed all of my winter blahs in the last three days. Unfortunately, after looking at my legs in shorts yesterday, I decided that I need some sun PRONTO.

The 1969 clan was out and about all weekend. On Saturday, we took in the festivities at Penn Relays. The big matchup was the US vs Jamaica relay showdown in the 4 x 100 relay. The USA took first and second but a tiny island nation took third.

GET EM TEAM TRINIDAD!!!!! Jamaica came in 9th place. It’s our time to shine!

After the race, we walked along Tali 1′s future Alma Mater’s campus…the University of Pennsylvania. (HE’ S IVY LEAGUE BOUND BYTCHES!)

Lo and behold, all of the sororities and fraternities were out having fun and stepping/strolling on the yard. It was hot outside  and almost everyone was in shorts and t-shirts. Oh not my sorors. LOL

img_1649

Who else would be at Penn Relays stepping in four inch stilettos, make up, hair laid and suits and cocktail dresses? Keeping it pretty since 1908 baby. I love my sorors. LOL (Shut up, I was with my kids rocking trouser jeans and a black tank top).

I did pose for a hot, sweaty picture in front of Ivy Hall though….

And how did the boys enjoy themselves?

They had fun too.

Hope everyone is enjoying the weather. We certainly are!

Back to Life

Did you miss me? Ahhhh, it’s good to be home.

I left last Thursday and headed up to the conference. On the way, I stopped in 30th street station to get a cup of coffee for the trip and ran into Richard Simmons doing aerobics with a team of dancers promoting Ocean Spray.

He shouted out “YOU! You in the pink…I know you want some craisins!”

Sigh….that could only happen to me. I ran up, did a few jumping jacks with Richard and was on my way to NYC.

(Uh….the years have not been kind to Mr. Simmons).

richard-simmons

And that’s how my crazy weekend began. The Conference was fun. The best part was having a nice fluffy hotel bed all to myself and waking up without having to take care of anyone. Ahhh…..a girl’s weekend.

I had fun running around the city. Ate at my favorite pizza restaurant….had a huge slice of Juniors cheesecake and enjoyed my time with my Sorors.

I came back with mama 1969 and we both were home with Tali 1 yesterday. We took him into the city (Philly) for a day out. He ended up with $40 worth of Pokemon cards, a new pair of hightop sneakers, five new shirts, two pairs of shorts and two pairs of dress pants.

Today, Mama 1969 decided that Tali 2 should stay home too so they could all hang out. I called her a fe wminutes ago and she was at Wendy’s with them. She sounded worn the heck out. LOL

Anywho…I am back at work, nursing a sore throat and plotting on leaving early today.

How was everyone’s weekend? What’s good in the hood?

I’m out!

Standard

Today is my last day of work before I head out to my sorority regional conference in NYC this weekend. I need a girl’s weekend in the worst way.

Chilling in a hotel room, eating great food, imbibing on a few cocktails, shopping and potential spa all while doing business in the name of the sorority. Yup, it’s all good. What makes it even better is that I will be in my hometown. I miss New York and can’t wait to be there.

Safe travels to NinaMM and MiaB and my other lovely Sorors from the North Atlantic Region.  I am sure we will all have a blast and hopefully, we will have a few stories that I can actually share. LOL…Discretion ladies, discretion.

When I return on Sunday…I will be returning with Mama 1969. She will be here for a few days next week and I can’t wait for a very special day next Monday. My Tali 1 turns seven. Let me leave it at that before I start crying.

Hope you all enjoy your weekends….I know I will enjoy mine.

Keeping up with 1969….

1969 is currently reading:

junot-diaz1

I just finished this book and loved it. The book is about Oscar, a 400 pound, sci-fi nerd from the Dominican Republic…living his life in New Jersey. It focuses on the story of his family and the fuku (curse) they are living under.

It appeals to my East Coast, Caribbean upbringing and my love of all books with rich, lush descriptive narratives weaved in with historical themes. Fabulous story.

1969 is currently listening to:

epmd

You know how you hear an old school song on the radio and then you have to dig the cd out of storage and start listening to it for the next two weeks? Yup….I am back in love with EPMD. LOL

Nothing beats pulling up to your Bougie Sorority meeting in your car blasting “So Whatchu Sayin?” and stepping out in your sharp diva outfit, with your pinky in the air……LMAO! I know my sorors are like….”WHO THE HELL IS THIS GHETTO CHICK?”
