Times Have Changed

Standard

I’m working from home today so I woke up and made breakfast for the boys before school. Since I planned on heading to the gym after I dropped Tali 1 to school, I got dressed and came downstairs. Mr. 1969 planned on taking Tali 2 to school (they go to the same school but are in different buildings) since he had an errand to run in that direction.

In the kitchen, the boys asked me what we had for breakfast. I ran down some options….eggs, bagels, cereal, oatmeal and they finally settled in on what they wanted. After breakfast, I broke out their heavier jackets since it was so cold this morning. I grabbed Tali 1 and we got in the car. He sat in the backseat and asked me if he could turn on the seat warmer. I told him yes and drove off to school. When we got there, the kids were lined up in the schoolyard. It was so cold that I told him to stay in the car until his class started walking in. Once we saw them moving, he jumped out and ran in the building.

As I got to the gym and started running on the treadmill, I had a revalation……………..DAMN, THESE KIDS ARE SPOILED.

I remember waking up and making my own breakfast. It was usually one option and I ate it even if I hated it. If I didn’t eat it, my mom would wrap that mess up and make me take it with me. I caught the NYC public bus to school. Two of them…when I was in third grade. I rode the B46 from Utica to Church Ave and then transferred and took the B35 to Flatbush (shouts out to my elementary school Holy Cross!)

I would be in my Catholic School skirt freezing on cold days rocking tights and leg warmers standing at the bus stop. If it rained, I still stood outside. I just wore more clothes.

I know, we are blessed to be able to do better for our children but damn…that boy was straight lounging. I swear tomorrow, he will be chopping wood outside in a tanktop and shorts. I can’t have these shenanigans in my own house.  LOL

  1. “I swear tomorrow, he will be chopping wood outside in a tanktop and shorts.” – rotflol! Yes, kids these days have it so good! I was changing my brother’s diapers at the age of 9 and making him his bottles and stuff. Not these days. These kids will look at you like o_O you want me to do what? No thanks!

  2. I can count on 1 hand the number of times my mother fixed breakfast for me in 12 years of school. If I didn’t grab something at school, or burn my own toast, I didn’t eat breakfast. And she hates when I mention this today (usually if someone is talking about how you should eat breakfast) I got myself up and dressed and out the door from 2nd grade on. She may have mumbled for me to grab my coat from her pillow. My school bus stop was outside her window, so she would peek out-from the warmth- to watch me.
But those are fairly simple breakfast options, that’s not too spoiled:). My cousin used to fix 3 different breakfasts for her 3 boys.

  3. Of course kids are spoiled. If it’s raining in the morning, Michael drops Mikaela off on his way to work. If it’s raining when she’s coming home from school, she’ll TEXT me from the bus requesting I pick her up from the bus stop. o_0 Not to mention she gets emails from her favorite retailers and forwards them to me during sales. Sigh… Kids are real fancy now.

  4. If my mom made breakfast it must have been a special occasion or it was breakfast for dinner. My mother once overheard me giving my kids breakfast options and she said, “What are you doing? Just make something and if they’re hungry, they’ll eat it!”

    • I SO agree with your mother. Kids are not “spoiled”. Parents are simply not willing to deal with the fallout of not giving in to their every whim. It’s not the kids’ fault. To each his own, but I am not a short order cook, and my kid doesn’t need a cell phone. Just sayin’.

  5. LOL My mom didn’t do those things either. I was on my own for a lot. It made me responsible though. Times sure have changed….

  6. TANK TOPS AND SHORTS!!!!! I can’t. My mom always said she was no short order cook. I might ask for input when I have kids. That doesn’t mean you get it, I’m just asking for suggestions. Lol

  7. LMBO! I pray the strength of my children to be’s constitution. Lol cuz they are going to hear how I walked to school second grade through college. They will know my every step that one time when it rained sleeted and snowed in one walk home after a long day of quizzes swimming practice and mid terms the next day (i.e. all my books were on my person that night). My niece and nephews call me, “Uncle Shovel” cuz I’ll put a little butt to work. Ha Haaaa. I would tell them how I was going to buy each of them a shovel so they could make some pocket change in the winter. I got some blank stares colder than the wind chill then I got the nickname.

  8. Yeah it doesn’t sound too spoiled to me. I got a ride to school and had breakfast options. I did have to ride the bus home though. One of my main complaints was my mom would not wash her car enough and I got mad because I didn’t want the kids to see me getting out a dirty car O_o Yeah I was a mess! It’s supposed to be better for the kids. They’re the future! LOL!

  9. I didnt get rides to school or breakfast made for me, smh. but my son…he is driven to his school almost every day, i make breakfast for him so yes he is spoiled for sure!!

  10. Girl yes. I feel the same way! I just finished making my son’s lunches and I can’t remember my mom EVER making my lunch, especially not in the 2nd and 4th grades. And once I was outta kindergarten, I knew where the bowls, spoons and cereal were – and she only bought Shredded Wheat and Grape Nuts! There was no Cinnamon Toast Crunch in our house!

Yeah, our kids have it good!

  11. One day, for the hell of it, make them take the bus. Mine caught an attitude this morning cause she wanted a damn gourmet breakfast. We don’t have time for that. Better befriend Tony the Tiger and go from there.

  12. OMG, I was thinking the same the other day when I asked my son what he wanted for breakfast. The question starts to sound so crazy as I ask it every morning but I still do. I NEVER got asked that. And then I’m parked at the bus stop most every morning and he sits in the car till the bus comes when its cold and/or raining. Never got that treatment either!! Too funny!

  13. LOL @ chopping wood in a tank top and shorts! Just be sure not to have cocoa and a warm blanket waiting for him when he’s done as that would completely the lesson!
