Forgive me for being MIA. The Thanksgiving week is always a hectic one for me.
My event, Philly’s Men Are Cookin’ last Saturday went smoothly. We raised money to benefit the young people in Philadelphia through scholarships and other charitable works. It’s always a ton of work to get the event off the ground but it’s so much fun once it’s here.
On Sunday, I woke up on a mission. I tried to wait until all of the good folks were in church and I set out to complete all of my Thanksgiving shopping.
I hit up my Amish market to pick up my fresh turkey. 1969 does not do frozen birds on the Thanksgiving table.
After that I hit up my produce market, to stock up on eggs, celery, greens, fresh sage, rosemary, onions, peppers, garlic….all of the good stuff.
Lastly, I did the grocery shopping. I had a grocery excel spreadsheet. (Shut up). See, cause you need to list out what you need for each item and then cross reference in case you already had that item on the list for another entree. Hey, you know I work with numbers right?
After I did all of that shopping…..I came home and unpacked. I had already cleaned out my refrigerator that morning and made enough room. I also stocked up on Plastic containers, Foil, Ziploc Bags. I swear, it’s all in the preparation.
My husband says I approach Thanksgiving like it’s the “damn Superbowl”. Well, it is. It’s the Superbowl of food. I need to make lists, make a game plan, prepare, train and then execute on Game Day.
What are you doing for the Holiday? Are you cooking or just eating?
LOL@ Spreadsheet! I’ve only done that ONE time but it was for school supplies for all three kids lol.
I am cooking and eating! This is the first time in YEARS that I am staying home and I am going to do it up! LOL
Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
My family does Thankgiving pot-luck style. I’m responsible for the cakes, brownies and cookies. Also going to do baked macaroni for the first time since my cousin is going to Jamaica for a wedding this weekend.
Girl, I am about to email you my spreadsheet! Hysterical! Mine is coded and has two different tabs. I totally feel you on this!
I’m eating…and reminding myself to bring beer to my mama’s house.
LMAO.. well I’m cooking but after I eat I may need to drive to Philly with my tupperware to get some leftovers from the Superbowl of Food!
Babs….you and I could hang out and do food shopping anytime! I may have to incorporate your grid into my list next time. Love it!
Dang after reading all that, I’m just eating!! Cause I sure can’t call what I do cooking… HMPH!
***i don’t like you, Creole, or Babs NO MORE******
Wait !!!!!! I change my mind. I’ll be in Philly for Thanksgiving and I just might want to still be your friend on Friday for leftovers. ROFL
Oh in addition…despite knowing you’re a Giants fan…Ravens 36, Eagles 7.
All I wanna know is was the spreadsheet on the Blackberry?
They ain’t EVEN ready. You know you can sort the spreadsheet by store so you get a really good shopping list too. ROFL! DON’T HATE ONEFROMPHILLY! ROCK IT OUT!
OneFromPhilly….call me if you are still in town.
Uh Fresh….no no…I printed it out because I needed to check things off as I purchased it. LOL
Amadeo…that score sounds about right.
@Funky Fresh: Of course…as a backup. AND…we might email it to someone just in case all else fails and we have to call on them to open it for us and we’re out and about.
I’m glad to know I’m not the only one that does an excel shopping list! I have mine broken down by aisles in the store! Then I have the misc. column for other things I have to pick up! ROFL
I don’t like Eric NO MORE EITHER!
LMAO…..this is a big meal. You have to organize. Once you start cooking….no one wants to leave the house to run to the store.
@Erica B- my list is categorized by aisle too! CG (Canned Goods), FV (Fresh vegetables) DY (dairy), etc. Makes the whole process so much easier!
I have a game plan to avoid gaining weight this season and I’m kicking it off on Thursday. I’m getting up and hitting the concrete for a nice, fast faced morning walk. Then I’m eating a hearty breakfast of oatmeal to keep me full and snacking on fuji apples during the day. I’m not depriving myself of my favorite foods (especially the mac & cheese), but I’ll take smaller portions. Then I’ll finish with another stroll.
Glad you had a successful event – I know how much work it takes.
Mannnnn, i want to make a smoked turkey this year. i do not like making frozen turkeys either!!! no excel or handwritten lists for me, lol, just lazy! I prolly start shopping right after i get out of school.
Wow, I am way out of my league here. excel sheet shopping lists? This is serious. I will be just eating. so my prep involves finding some loose jeans. You remind me of my grandmother who already has brisket, chitterlings, and some other meat I won’t be eating ready, the mac and cheese, and several cakes and pies done. I just stay out the way and help clean up.
Phillygyrl you can buy a smoked turkey from the Amish market/Reading Terminal. My friend buys one every year.
This spreadsheet thing is blowing me right now. Someone send me an email with their spreadsheet. Do you put formulas in the cells too?!?!?!?
Oh cool!! Thanks! I didnt know they had them there. I was going to get the Butterball smoked turkey from Aldi. Thats the only place i know that has them.
Cooking and eating. Making mac and cheese and dressing. Also, a small boneless ham with brown sugar and pineapples. Decided at the last minute to do that. It’s only two of us so we’re not having a whole turkey. We’re having turkey wings My girlfriend who I’m visiting picked those up and someone else is making the greens for us. I’m heading down to Richmond on Thursday morning. We’re also having sweet potatoes. Desserts are chocolate cake and lemon pie. Sounds like more than enough for two people.
I’m cooking Gumbo this year. I picked up all needed except the crab. I want fresh crab, so I will have my Mom pick it up for me tomorrow.
You are seriously hardcore with an excel spreadsheet! Love it!
I am cooking a little bit but my husband is working so it’ll be me and the boys. Heck, we might just go to a bunch of movies and then head to House of Pies for pumpkin pie!
I am happy that my OCD Thanksgiving maniac self is somewhat shared.
My sisters say that I drive them crazy with my uber methodical approach to the thanksgiving meal.
Sunday was shopping day. Farmer’s market check, 3 different groceries (for specific items) check, check, check.
I made my pie crusts last night and froze them.
Tonight, it’s gravies, peeling and cutting of potatoes and brining the turkey.
Then it’s all out on the field tommorrow.
Yup, superbowl indeed!
Get em Ms Sula! I love it….
