Last year, we had a layover in Puerto Rico and my oldest son jumped into the swimming pool and went down the water slide not knowing how deep it was at the bottom. Of course, he started to sink, panic set in and he was pulled out by a gentleman right before we could get to him.
This summer, the first thing I did was enroll him in swimming lessons. My normally fearless son who loved the water, was so nervous about swimming class. He kept telling me that he didn’t want to go. The weeks leading up to it were torture for him.
We woke up yesterday, I fed him breakfast and got ready to take him swimming. When we arrived, he was okay. There was a playground outside and since we were early, I let him run around.
His entire demeanor changed the minute we stepped into the building. I had never seen such anxiety or fear on my sons face. He was so nervous.
It took some coaching but he got into the pool. He also blew some bubbles after much coaxing to get him to put his face in the water. He also attempted to float on his back.
At the end of his lesson, he was excited to go back next week.
If you have ever read the book The Alch.emi.st, you know that lessons to be learned are placed all over the universe and in plain view. It takes a trained eye to not overlook them and an open heart to decipher the messages.
Today, I saw my son conquer his fear. He lept out on faith, took a chance and found out that he had the ability within him to do something he had not thought possible.
I can’t overlook that this was God sending me a message and I need to figure out how to apply it in my daily life.

Man I feel your son’s pain.
I was okay when I was in my little swimmer’s class with the milk jug floats back in the day, but one time a few years down the road…when the lady said jump and swore she’d catch me and didn’t…
It was a traumatic experience.
After that I HATED swimming class with a passion!
To this day, the smell of chlorine makes me nervous…
Shame too because I was a really fast swimmer…

I’m so proud of him for overcoming his fear. There are adults who refuse to do that.

Him and his whole class will be jumping off of the high diving board by the end of Level II. Tali has big heart, he just needed for his ability to catch up with his heart!!

Aw, I remember swimming class being totally traumatic when i was a kid. I always thought that if the lady teaching the class let go of my when I was floating, I would sink.
The funny thing is, they say babies are natural swimmers, but somewhere along the way, that gets lost.

I feel his pain. I just conquered one of my water related fears when I went jet skiiing in Miami. Up until then, my water experience had been limited to pools and bathrooms. The thought of being out in the middle of the ocean with no bottom in sight kept me on dry land for 30 years. Now, I can’t wait to get back out there. Glad your son faced his fears. Glad I faced mine as well.

I am glad that you still encouraged him to do it even though it was tough for him. I even learned from reading this. Go Tali!

WTG Tali! That’s not the basement pool at Tech, is it?
ZB is just now barely getting over his fear of water despite a few summers of swimming “lessons”.

Swimming class was cool for me cause my cousin was teaching it…if he let me drown my family could kill him worry free.
I can’t help but think, you’ll have alot of photos to use on those gents when they get to dating age.
