Each one Teach one

31 Mar

The panel on Friday went well. The topic was “Women in the Hospitality Industry” and I was among five women that had a chance to talk about our career paths and how we managed to move up the corporate ladder in a male dominated field.

I told them about starting out as an assistant in the Sales office and how I fought to get an interview with the Regional Director of Sales so I could get into the Management Training program at Corporate. Once I got in front of the RVP, I wowed him and told him that I was ready to move into a management role and that my talents were being wasted. Somehow, he bought it and I ended up working in an 800 room hotel in Manhattan as a management trainee.

I learned so much in that year. I worked in every department of the hotel, from scrubbing toilets in Housekeeping to prepping food for thousands paying $200 per plate. That year of internship was the single most important year of my career.

I learned the importance of each department and every job to the success of the overall hotel. We can promise the world to a client but if one guest finds a stray hair in their tub? It’s all over. In essence, we can sell the dream……but they have to service the nightmare.

After doing all of their jobs, I understood how hard the staff works. They perform labor intensive jobs and are often underpaid and under-praised. When I became a hotel manager, one year later, I never forgot the lessons I learned in that year of training.

I made it a point to say thank you for all tasks and to treat the employees like my family. I got to know them. I asked about their families, their lives. I know their stories and kids names. If they had a rough night cleaning rooms for a group I booked……I greeted them with donuts at 6:30am the next morning and said THANK YOU. If the Front Office had to deal with my group and the folks were difficult? I brought them pizza and treated the desk to lunch.

The biggest reward of extending myself? If I need anything in this building, my staff will always have my back. They will go to the ends of the earth to make me look good in front of my customer and my boss. It really is a life lesson. Common courtesy and graciousness will take you further in your career than being an azzhole. You better believe it and you can quote me on that.

Needless to say, it was a fun panel. I was honest about the pros and cons of what I do. The long hours (hotels NEVER close), the pay (it takes years to finally start making major money), etc…are all factors to think about before jumping in.

What was great was networking with some other women in the industry and meeting the female leaders of tomorrow. Despite Hilary C….I think we are in good hands.

And for SIP….I wore a classic gray pantsuit with a yellow chiffon tuxedo blouse underneath. How’s that?

Back 2 School

28 Mar

Tomorrow I will be the guest speaker at one of our fine Philadelphia institutes of higher learning. The topic is “Women in the Hospitality Industry” and I will stand before fresh faced college students considering hospitality careers and tell them about the industry and how I got started.  It seems like just yesterday, I was sitting in class not knowing what I wanted to do with my life.

In my 20′s, I was so stressed. Would I ever find the right job? Would I ever own a house? Would I find a husband? What about kids?

Those years after college have brought contentment into my life. I have found my happiness and now I am focused on enjoying myself and not stressing the future. I really am at peace. I wake up next to my life partner everyday. I look into the faces of my beautiful children and see the future in their eyes. I see all of life’s possibilities. I work and know that I do it because I enjoy it, not because it’s a means to an end.

Tomorrow when I stand in front of those kids, I want to share with them that life is truly a  journey. I fell into what I do by accident and it has become my career. I have had so many adventures and worked with some great people who love to serve others. Hospitality is either in your blood or it isn’t. You can train someone on how to work in a hotel but you can’t train people skills. You have to have that spark. The willingness to serve.

Working in a Hotel is not for everyone. The guests are not always appreciative, clean or fun. However, it is about the small things that make the guests smile. The attention to detail. The anticipation of their needs. Above all, it’s a job where you really have fun everyday. We are always laughing and we are like one big family. Working all of the crazy hours are only bearable because we have each other. That and the fact that guests are hilarious. Really, we laugh at all of the stuff you do. (You’ve read the Hotel Chronicles.)

Yes, tomorrow, I hope to enlighten tomorrow’s leaders. Hell, one of them may grow up to be my boss. Wish me luck and enjoy the weekend.

Remember the Time.

When TV was funny and/or entertaining?

You couldn’t miss an episode of Satur.day Nig.ht Li.ve with Eddie Murphy on it. Remember Ja.mes Br.own Celebrity HOT TUB

Remember Ch.ris Far.ley and P.atr.ick Sw.ayze trying out to be Ch.ippen.dale’s dancers? CLASSIC. One of the funniest things I have ever seen on tv. Ch.ris Far.ley killed it!!!!!

Thursday nights, the Cos.by Sh.ow, Diff.erent Wo.rld lineup? Families could watch TV together…there’s a concept.

And one of my favorite shows was N.igh.t Co.urt. That show was hilarious. Da.n Fie.ld.ing is one of the great TV characters. I loved him.

The show I really miss? Ar.sen.io H.a.ll. Corny as he was, every fly, up and coming musical act debuted on his show. From the first time I saw Ma.ri.ah sing Vision of Love live to J.ode.ci…..he featured everyone and gave them a break on National TV. I stayed up late to catch Ar.se.nio and I know you did too. (Well, those of you near my age).

What do we have now? Reality TV. No family shows where the kids are respectful…cause all of the parents on TV are currently idiots and the kids are clearly running things.

90.210 and the re.al wo.rld have been replaced by The H.ills, Sw.eet Six.teen and G.oss.ip Gyrls. Where all the kids are filthy rich, and again…the parents spoil them or get treated like idiots.

Where did we go wrong? Yesterday in Philadelphia, four teenaged boys beat and killed the manager of the Starbucks I frequent. He was 36 and was jumped on a subway platform by four sixteen year olds trying to rob him. He fought back and ended up going into cardiac arrest. He died at the hospital.

I don’t know what is happening to our youngsters. I don’t know when they lost the respect they had for others or for themselves but they are definitely lost.

Another innocent man, who was due to get married later this year, has lost his life.

America, we need a reality check and I know we won’t find it on reality tv.

Liar, liar pants on fire.

26 Mar

Aren’t you supposed to wait until you are actually President before you start lying to the American people?

Voters of Pennsylvania…..please think about your choices. Think about how Obama’s character, his friends, his life…..have been attacked throughout this campaign. In response, he has answered all questions with integrity and honesty.

Think about the characteristics you would welcome in your leader, the person you would want to represent you and your country on a global level.

Do you want more lies? More untruths? Haven’t the last two decades been enough?

Food for thought.

The Hotel Chronicles

25 Mar

One night when I was Hotel Manager On Duty, I received a call that we had a “situation” at the Front Desk.

When I arrived at the desk, the Front Office manager motioned for me to come behind the desk. I went back there and followed him to his office. A worried looking gentleman was seated at his desk.

It seems that Mr. X was unable to pay for his room. This was back in the day when we didn’t pre-pay your room on the credit card when you checked in. You actually paid for everything when you checked out and settled your account.

Turns out Mr. X had checked in and then brought a “working girl” back to his room. After a fun and rather tiring evening, he fell asleep. He awoke to find all of his valuables and wallet missing.

Mr. X was a nervous, crying wreck. He couldn’t call home because he was *ahem* married and he couldn’t pay for anything. No credit cards, no cash.

We ended up letting him leave with a promise to bring us the money in 24 hours before we contacted his company for payment. The money was brought in, in cash, in a few hours.

In addition, he sent us a personal note thanking us for our discretion. I wanted to send him a personal note telling him that I was >>this close<< to accidentally calling his house and mentioning his indiscretion to his wife and asking her for a credit card number to pay his bill. LOL

Another day, another adventure.

Back to work

24 Mar

Hope everyone had a great Easter. I ended up enjoying a quiet afternoon with the boys yesterday after I woke up early and did a 5 mile walk and we came back from church.

Mr. 1969 had a great event on Saturday. I made so much food and they still ate everything and finally left at 4am. I was so through that we had guests until 4am but when I came downstairs to survey the damage the next morning….the kitchen and downstairs area were both spotless. Mr. 1969 and his frat brothers cleaned up after their party. Gotta love them.

As far as my little shopping excursion….I had a nice leisurely lunch and picked up a linen suit and two pairs of shoes for the spring. One pair of metallic peep toe flats and a pair of wedge heels.

All in all, a good weekend and I am back to the grind today. How was everyone’s holiday?

**On a side note…..Happy Anniversary to Monnie and Robby!!!!! Enjoy your special day and each other.

Grab Your Church Hat….

21 Mar

church-hat.jpg

Working from home with both boys today. I am typing and they are climbing ALL OVER me.

In addition, Mr. 1969 has promised me an undisclosed sum of money and the afternoon child free if I whip up a smorgasboard for about 7 of his closest friends to watch the games tomorrow at Casa 1969.

You know I am all over it!

He has requested chili and all of the fixings. So I am planning a grocery list full of chili items, cheddar and jalapeno cornbread, chips, dips and probably some chocolate brownies for dessert.

It never ends folks. LOL

I am taking a breather to wish you all a wonderful Easter weekend. I hope you all sport your best church hats on Sunday and eat lots of chocolate eggs and Star.burst Jelly Beans (they’re the BEST!!!). ENJOY!

Spring Forward

20 Mar

 frangipani-flower1.jpg

Ahhh…it’s the first day of Spring. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and it’s no secret that I love warm weather (the warmer the better).

In the last week, since my business trip and sorority convention ended…I have kicked my fitness efforts back into high gear. My daily workouts and food log are back in effect. To quote that great sage…Always Funky Fresh….it’s time for OSAG …..Operation Shrink A Gut (TM).

Now I don’t quite have a gut but I workout for different reasons. As I get older, I need to make sure everything is toned and firm. I want arms and legs. I want a decent stomach (as decent as it can be after two babies). I want to eat healthy and feel good.

I know that when I don’t eat the right foods, I feel like crap. I get lazy, lethargic and I’m always tired. I can’t afford time to veg on my couch with the Tali terrors roaming around. So I need to step it up.

In addition, I love to workout outside. Now that the weather is breaking, I can’t wait to put my new sneakers to the test.

If you are at home wondering how I manage to find time to workout when I have two kids and work ten hours a day…..let me say this….YOU CAN MAKE TIME. This is about YOU.

We all have 20-30 minutes to spare. Think about places you can fit in 20 minutes of at least brisk walking. If you have C.om.cast (yeah, I know, they’re the debil), they have fitness videos on de.man.d. Some are as quick as a ten minute Ab session, some are a full out 30-40 minutes of the Fir.m or Ta.e Bo sessions that will kick your azz. I like to wake up early and do the 1 mile jog (yes, in your living room, only 18 minutes) and the 15 minute standing abs.

Another great thing to maintain is an online food journal. There are a ton of free sites and you can log what you’re eating and your exercise for the day. When you actually write down your food intake….it is eye opening. Let’s just say that I have carb issues :)   It’s also interesting for me when I see the number of calories I take in and realize that I need to do somehing to burn them off. They won’t just disappear on their own.

Either way, I hope you will choose to spring forward with your health this year. Less processed food, more whole grains and load up on the fruit and vegetables. We can do this! And don’t set unrealistic goals. From a size 22 to a 2? Come on…..is that even possible? How about promising yourself that you’ll cut out dessert or those Daily Frap.pucino’s? How about making sure you and your kids or dog take an evening walk after dinner? Baby steps.

Enjoy your first day of Spring. Tali and I are off to the track to get our walk on.

1969′s Style Icons

19 Mar

Spring Fashion is weighing heavy on my mind. New purses, shoes, and my favorite…..the DRESSES. *sigh*

I started thinking about women with style and who I admired growing up. I present to you….my style icons. The women that continue to influence my tastes, even today.

AUDREY

audrey2.jpg

Audrey is the woman that singlehandedly made the little black dress a wardrobe staple. She would wear classic, tailored pieces and she always looked like a million bucks. I remember watching Br.eak.fast at Ti.ffan.y’s and being mesmerized by her simple elegance. Black dress, pearls and a radiant smile.

Lesson learned: Classic clothing is timeless. Simple, understated elegance goes a long way.

DIAHANN

diahanncarroll.jpg

Diahann has always been impeccable. She has been a trailblazer on screen (in Ju.lia) as well as an accomplished singer. I remember watching her in so many roles and she always brought class and grace to every performance. She never resorted to hoochieness (new word) to get a part. She stayed true to her ideals. She was Mrs. Gilbert on a Diff.eren.t Wo.rld and the ultimate Diva ….D.om.iniq.ue Deve.reau.x on Dyn.asty. I loved to see what she would wear when she fought that damned Alexis!

And really, who has aged better than Ms. Carroll? FLAWLESS.

36-diahann-carroll.jpg

LESSON LEARNED: Growing Older means growing better. Carry yourself like a lady always and never compromise your integrity.

JAYNE

jayne-kennedy.jpg

When I was younger, my aunt dubbed me Little Jayne Kennedy. She always said I reminded her of the actress. Now I know that Jayne’s image ended up tarnished but she was always one of my favorites because I loved sports as a young girl (and still do). To watch this beautiful, intelligent black woman hold her own as the first black female sportscaster was HUGE for me. I loved her and still do. And I still think she was an original NATURAL beauty.

LESSON LEARNED: Women that like sports are sexy!

NAOMI

naomicampbell.jpg

To open fashion magazines or watch runway shows and see a Caribbean Woman was major for me growing up. I love me some Naomi. And two decades later, she still looks as impeccable as she did the first time she graced the catwalk. Her swagger (as the youngsters say) is so serious…..there will never be another. Even T.y T.y Ba.by has to bow down. Just don’t give her a Blackberry.

LESSON LEARNED: Walk like you’re broke and the rent is due.

DIANA

diana-ross-blue-01.jpg

Miss Ross bytches. The DIVA. Over the top, always fabulous. The outfits, the hair, the makeup. She is my favorite icon of all time. She did it and created the mold for every diva that has come after her. There would be no E.n Vo.gue without the Su.pre.me’s. No Be.yon.ce without Lady Di. She is a true living legend and one of the all time greats. I cried over Lady Si.ngs the Bl.ues and jumped up and down when she came back for Bil.ly De.e in Maho.gany. I can’t even talk about Mah.ogany wihout going back to the clothes, the makeup, the hair. Whew. She is the Boss.

LESSON LEARNED: Paying attention to detail. The look from head to toe. Total Flawlessness.

The Randomness

18 Mar

Yesterday was one of those days. Not only was it Monday, our entire Regional team was in town for one of those “state of the Market” meetings. Our team pulled together a great deck and we each reported out on our areas. Some were more fluff than substance, but they seemed pleased with the overall results.

Today, my babysitter failed to show up. Tali 1 is on Spring Break and I will be working from home on Thursday and Friday but we were counting on her for today and tomorrow. So after calling in some favors, we found a backup and I will try and leave early.

My life is STILL CRAZY.

In other news, my home state of NYC welcomed our new Governor. Despite his backing of Hilary Clinton, I am proud that he gets to run the State. I just hope he’s prepared for the media spotlight that will now be all over him. NY is a tough town when you have enemies. Hell, it’s a tough town when you’re liked!

And in closing, I leave you with THIS.
