I am back! Work has been kicking me in the azz all week. But it’s Friday and I am on the blog rebound.
I was reading in the news about K.wam.e K.il.patrick, the Mayor of Detroit.
He had previously denied, under oath, having an affair with his Chief of Staff and now they have seized a boatload of text messages clearly showing otherwise.
He is married with 3 children and she is married. *sigh*
This post is not about cheating. This post is about THINKING. If you are the Mayor. Especially the BLACK MAYOR. Don’t you know that your behind is under constant scrutiny? Don’t you know that everyone smiling at you may not necessarily have your back?
If you are the black female Chief of Staff, and you’re cute and sleeping with the Mayor……don’t you realize that all of those women in the office want to see you get busted?
So do you guys buy a separate phone to call and text each other with? Oh no, you text all of those “meet me at the hotel, it’s going down” messages on your state issued mobile devices.
Kwame stands to lose his job as Mayor, his law license for lying under oath the first time (cause he surely won’t get pardoned like Mr. Clin.ton) not to mention, his wife and children should she decide to leave his dumb azz.
Why are people so simple? Its called cheating cause if you’re doing it…..you’re supposed to be sneaking around. Not walking around the office clearly flirting and carrying on. The whole office is talking about you two. He’s probably regaling his other aide’s with stories about their encounters…..she’s probably throwing her weight around the building, enjoying the perks, the new parking space, strolling in late…LOL
I know all of those folks couldn’t WAIT to rat them out. Why are folks so stoooopid?

people who behave this way are people who were never taught consequences as children–that’s the only thing I can think of. They always found a way out or the promised spankings/punishment never came and they were able to just bargain their way out of stuff.
This is really upsetting. Do people just not respect the sanctity of marriage and the vows that they take any more? What about your children? And of course he’s been dubbed the “hip hop mayor.”
I think some people are just so arrogant that they feel they can do anything and not receive any consequences. As far as this case goes I feel they have been knocked off their high horse quite properly.

Also, 1969..the aide is divorced. Her husband wasn’t standing for that mess, MUCH LIKE I WOULDN’T!!! That’s what I’m talking about right there, he wasn’t standing on the podium in the public looking like no damn idiot.

As for Kilpatrick, he is on the verge of snatching defeat from the jaws of success. How do you go from being born to prominent parents, going to FAMU, being captain of the football team, pledging Alpha (hey … we all make mistakes), earning a JD, becoming leader of the Democratic Caucus in the Michigan State House and being elected mayor at the age of 31 to lying under oath about having an affiar?
And what’s the story with the 14,000 text messages? The convo should have been real short and sweet.

Detroit needs to get rid of Kwame Levert yesterday. If if doesn’t, it deserves whatever happens next.

the texts were old. he issued a stmt saying something along the lines like “he and his wife were going thru a difficult stage… they’ve travelled over this bridge… please don’t bring up something he and his family have worked out already”
the real issue is him lying about the affair, not the affair itself.
I worked on the Mayors Campaign both times and worked with Christine on several occassions. Of everything I read your post hit the nail on the head.

Kwame could have done excellent work but the attitude that I can do anything because I’m mayor has ruined what could have been a great legacy.
I feel sorry for his wife and children.

O.K., so I have to comment seeing as though (and pleeeeeease know that I in NOOOO WAY boastful when I say this) but, O.K….. here it is…. I went to high school with BOTH of them and were “friends” with both of them. They were friends in High school and her now ex-husband (who was one year younger than us) went to our high school too AND i understand coaches her kids. Now, while we were not close friends, we were friends enough that we could have dinner and carry on a decent conversation without awkwardness.
Her mother and my mother worked together….her mother is ACTUALLY the one who taught me how to drive! wow.
With that bit of pleasantries aside, why people…just why?????
The evidence is damning…..I mean why would you (as 1969 said) fuck around and be SOOO obvious… texting PERIOD, but on city equipment????
I think it is a sad reflection on out city, but I do not think they should go to jail.
But then again, I didn’t think that Martha Stewart, Lil Kim, Marion Jones OR Mike Vick should’ve been sent to an ACTUAL jail for perjury. but that’s just me. I think that the damn prisons/penal systems are SOOOO overcrowded that it just makes no sense to send them to jail for these infractions. Just my opinion.
At the end of the day it comes down to his family and her family having to deal with the alleged infidelity at hand and the waste of tax payer dollars. Nothing more. Just like Clinton…. I feel like I felt about him too…. him & Monica had NOTHING to do with him running the country and I feel the same about Kwame. If i had it my way, they would pay a fine and let’s get back to business at hand of running a CITY because ALLLLL this DRAGGGGGGGGGGGGING this mess out does is make our city look WORSE! The LONGER it’s talked about does NOTHING GOOD for the city. Yeah, I understand the bureaucracy of it all..blah, blah, blah…… it’s about healing these people’s families and though the alleged activity is a disgrace, them going to jail would SEVERELY impact their lives….forever. I know as officers of the city they have a higher “responsibility” to be “above reproach”, but who is WITHOUT their bad choices???? I am not taking this lightly, because this is a JACKED up situation, but damn….. they have been GUNNING for him since he was ELECTED and I can GUARANTEE that one of Detroit’s old mayors (Coleman A. Young, now deceased) did far WORSE things than Kwame and GOT.A.WAY.WITH.IT!!!! No one was “gunning”for him the way they were Kwame and THAT to me is one of the BIGGEST hypocritical things ABOUT this city!
Should they be faced with SOME repercussion? yes. Jail, no.
They most certainly should be jailed. Perjury is serious business and elected officials should be held to the highest standard. It could be argued that not only did Kilpatrick lie but that he persuaded Beatty to lie, also a felony.
If Marion Jones, who lied about whether or not she took steroids, was sentenced to six months (and she should have been), Kilpatrick and Beatty should go down for at least a couple of years.
