We need a resolution.

Standard

I watched a show on B.ET last night.., can you believe that? LOL

It was a top ten countdown of moments that have negatively affected Black History. It included things like Hurricane Katrina, gangs, drugs, the deaths of Malcolm and Martin, AIDS and then at the top was slavery.

It was very interesting to watch (especially with crazy Paul M.o.o.ney hosting-love him!). However, as I watched I became angry. Black people, I can’t lie. We have been through a lot. It is disheartening when you look at the history that we have come through and the state we are currently in. There is absolutely no denying the past.

The bad news is…..the 40 acres and a mule are not coming.

The good news is………Do you really need that to start to do better for yourself?

The responsibility for changing us starts with us. In our households. With our families and our children. One at a time.

We have to accept responsibility for our futures. Other races have grasped the understanding that education is the means to move their people forward. They have started to push and challenge their children and are raising some of the brightest kids we have ever seen. You already know that with knowledge comes power and financial freedom. When you don’t know something…..are you challenging yourself to go and find out the answer? It is NOT COOL to be dumb. Period. I can remember asking my mom what a word meant and she would make me go look it up and then come back and use it in a sentence. Challenge yourself to become smarter. More knowledgeable. Read the news daily. Understand what it means to invest your money. Teach yourself about credit, buying property and managing your money. What is holding you back from getting the job you want? What are you doing to rectify that situation? You are your own investment. What are you doing to grow and make yourself more valuable?

In the past twenty years, aids has gone from being a disease of a few to the number one killer of black women today. NUMBER ONE. Our sisters have to demand that power over their bodies. We are not whores and hoochies. We are beautiful black women, the nurturers of our generation and we are making poor choices. We are risking our lives for a fleeting feeling of love. We have to find that love in places other than beneath a man that would risk your life for his personal satisfaction. Start with you. Love yourself. Recognize your worth. If you have kids……Put your kids first. A mother should know that but some of us seem to have forgotten.

Black men…I know you have it hard. The odds are stacked against you. Most of you don’t even have fathers or male role models to pattern yourself after. Please don’t lose faith. We need you. I need you. My sons need you. We need our men to be men. To lead us. We have irrevocably broken down the family unit. We have children raising children. Mothers struggling to do your jobs. Those children are YOUR responsibility. They are our future. When you fail them, you fail us. How many more obstacles are we going to throw in their paths and expect them to navigate without help?

2008 is upon us. A new year. A clean slate. What are your resolutions? Not just for yourself but for all of us? What can you do better? How can you affect change directly? Are you doing all you can do to make yourself and the rest of us better? It starts with a single person. It really does.

Resolution (synonyms) determination, perseverance, tenacity; strength, fortitude.

Happy New Year to all. Thank you for reading and getting to know me as I have gotten to know you. I wish us all change, prosperity, wisdom and strength in the new year. Be safe!

New Year, New You

Standard

The new year is coming. For me, it’s been a somewhat challenging but rewarding year. Overall, I have made some new friends, learned from a few mistakes and overcome some obstacles.

I am against resolutions. I just like to list the things I need to continue to work on as I grow up :)

1. Growing the Portfolio

We have our finances and savings under control. This year, I would like to invest in some property. Hopefully, I can take this next step in 2008.

2. Complete stage 2 of our home renovation.

This is an ongoing process for us. The house is coming along but these old stone homes need work. We are hoping to complete our 2nd floor bathroom re-do in 2008.

3. Take better care of myself.

Almost two years ago, I eliminated red meat and pork from my diet. This year, I am going to continue down this road. I have been reading more about my health and fitness. Learning more about how my body works. I have SLACKED beyond belief over the holidays but have worked out for the last three days in a row. I am starting to get back on track with my morning routine. At 38, you already know I am trying to go into my forties as fabulous as possible. So OSAG (Operation Shrink A Gut (c) Always Funky Fresh) will be in full effect for the new year.

4. Work on my Patience with my kids

ONGOING.

5. Work on my relationship with God.

ONGOING.

6. Schedule a Trip with my mom

As my mom gets older, the time we have together becomes more valuable. I want to schedule a mother daughter trip for her birthday. Maybe treat her to a spa weekend or something. Just the two of us.

What are you working on this year?

“I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best.”        Frida Kahlo

young_frida1.jpg

My favorite artist’s work is coming to Philadelphia. I am a huge fan of Frida Kahlo. This woman was born just a few days shy of my birthday and I relate to the power of her art like no other.

She was a brilliant artist caught up in a tumultuous relationship. Her husband, Diego Rivera, was an equally famous artist and they were the toast of Mexico and at the center of the renaissance taking place in the art community in their day. They singlehandedly put the Mexican art scene on the map and became the toast of art circles throughout the world.

Frida loved Diego passionately. He loved her equally but also had a penchant for other women….including Frida’s sister.

Her paintings reflect her physical pain (she was in a major trolley accident as a teenager and wore a metal back brace for most of her life.) and her emotional pain. She dealt with her love of an unfaithful man, her infertility and her thoughts of death.

Her art was personal and passionate. If you haven’t seen the movie starring Salm.a H.ayek….do so. If you have a chance to check out her exhibit…I encourage you to do it.

two_fridas.jpg

This painting of “Two Fridas” shows her on the right in her traditional Mexican dress, holding a picture of her husband Diego. This was the Frida that Diego loved. On the left, the Frida in the European style dress. The enlightened Frida embracing change, wanting to grow……the Frida she longed to be….the Frida with the broken heart. The one bleeding to death while the other Frida lived.

You need to go check her out when the exhibit comes to town.

Til the Fat Lady Sings

There is only one thought that consumes me as this weekend approaches. That thought is football. Yes, FOOTBALL.

The Ne.w Engl.and Pat.riots are one game away from completing an unbeaten season. This feat has not been accomplished since the Miami Dolphins did it back in 1972. They went undefeated in the regular season and then again in the playoffs, winning the Superbowl.

The Patriots are a dominating force to behold. Their arsenal of weapons include arguably the best Quarterback in the league and the always dangerous, Mr. Moss at wide receiver.

The last team that has a chance to stop this Juggernaut? You guessed it. My beloved New York Football Giants. *sigh*

Now our season has been good. Not great. Our quarterback is always suspect. Our offense, sketchy. So it’s gonna come down to a prayer and a dream but I don’t know……I have to believe that it can be done. The Giants can do this. If our defense can get to Brady early and often……anything is possible. This is the game to end all games. Osi, Strahan, Plaxico…….let’s get it popping on Sunday.

So don’t call me this weekend. I will need all of my energy to focus on a Giant Victory.

We can do this BIG BLUE!

Pass the Egg Nog!

Our Christmas Day is winding down. We had so much fun. I have been up since 4am cooking. My mom, brother and a few friends stopped by to celebrate the day with us.

The kids woke up around 6:30 this morning. The highlight of the day? Laptops!

Can you believe that kids are getting laptops? I remember getting some lego’s and thinking I was so cool! They have definitely upgraded since then.

The turkey and trimmings were delicious!!!

Mr. 1969 and the Tali’s just went to visit their uncle and drop off some gifts.

All the guests are gone. I am sipping some Egg Nog, hair piled up in a scrunchy, wearing plaid Christmas Pajamas and thick socks in full effect…..and I am enjoying the calm. Reflecting on what this day is really all about.

Love, peace and hope. It’s about being humbled and being thankful for all our blessings and for the small miracles that come into our lives everyday. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Twas the night before Christmas….

Standard

and I am sleepy.

I was woken up by my oldest son at 2am. He was struck by a serious stomach virus and without sharing the grimy details…..we were up until 4am. It’s not fun watching your baby hugging a toilet bowl and crying. So after a 3am trip by Mr. 1969 to pick up some Children’s Mylanta…..we all fell asleep at 4.

Only to be woken by the little Tali promptly at 6:30am. Demanding breakfast. *sigh*

Technically, I am working from home today too but our office closes at noon. I have so much to do today. Food preparation. Cleaning. Baking cookies for Santa. Sick child.

I am trying to nurse him back to health. You just can’t be sick on Christmas!!!! If anyone has stomach virus remedies, holla at your girl.

This is a Man’s World….

Standard

The Ki.ng of Pru.ssia Mall hosted an event two nights ago called “Men’s Nyght Out”. An evening of shopping for men. They had an open bar, hors d’oeuvres and had scantily dressed women with boobs serving the beverages with Santa hats on.

All of this in an effort to get the men to come out shopping, stop procastinating and buy their gifts.

**crickets**

I am speechless. Where are our cocktails, pedicures and Boris Tyson Elba’s? Why do the men get rewarded for slacking?

Mr.1969 was watching the news with me as they followed all of the men (who seemed to be doing more drinking than buying) and exclaimed that it was “marketing genius”.

What say you ladies? The loyal customers, true spenders……when was the last time the stores rewarded you?

(and this is not hate….it’s envy)

So today, I went to my oldest Tali’s Winter Festival at school. He played the role of narrator and did a great job!

He was so excited to have me in his classroom and we plan to have a great “Mommy and Son” day today. Enjoying the sights and sounds of the Season!
